SUMMARY:Going Deeper - Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 17\, 2025 at 9:30 AM\, the Interfaith Contemplative Center (ICC) will be hosting an opportunity to use the spiritual discipline of journaling to explore issues of the day in response to an unraveling of compassionate values and visions in society and institutions. This experience will be led by Gail Collins-Ranadive\, retired Unitarian Universalist minister and author\, who will use images from the natural world and written word as scripture for deepening our inner understanding and wisdom that lead to witnessing and acting in our outerworld. We will meet from 9:30 AM to Noon on May 17 at the ICC\, 4770 Harrison Drive\, both in-person and on Zoom. \n\nWith the Courage of Doves: A Writing Workshop for Witness and Resistance\nRev. Gail Collins-Ranadive \nFor Contemplation before the workshop\, as a practice writing exercise;\n“Moral law lies at the center of Nature and radiates to the circumference. It is the pith and\nmarrow of every substance\, every relation\, and every process. All things with which we deal\,\npreach to us. What is a farm but a mute gospel?” Ralph Waldo Emerson. \nBecause my Unitarian faith tradition has roots in American Transcendentalism (Emerson was a\nUnitarian minister before he became a philosopher)\, Nature is my sacred text. Thus I am inviting\nyou to contemplate a tree: i.e. take a long loving look at what’s real. \nIf you could have only what tree\, what would it be? (Write down your response.)\nA deciduous tree symbolizing the changing seasons of your life\, or an evergreen that\nsuggests immortality? \nIs it a favorite tree from your childhood\, one you climbed perhaps\, of perhaps were\nforbidden to climb? \nIs it a flowering tree\, calling to mind the words of the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh:\n“the almond tree in your back yard is itself truth\, reality\, your own self. But who has really seen\nthis tree?” \nCarl Jung once told a client: “why not go into the forest for a time; sometimes a tree tells\nyou more than can be read in books.” \nTrees have symbolically had one of the widest ranges of meanings among humans\nacross our planet. The form of the tree\, with its roots imprisoned in the earth\, its powerful\,\nvertically ascending trunk\, and its crown that seems to strive toward heaven\, has symbolized\nthe union of the cosmic realms of the underworld\, of terrestrial life\, and of heaven. These\naspects contribute to the idea of the world tree\, whose leaves and branches support mythic\nanimals\, the souls of the deceased or the unborn\, or by the rising sun and moon (Herder’s\nDictionary). \nAnd so we know of Hinduism’s inverted tree that symbolizes the unfolding of all being\nout of a primal ground; Buddhism’s Bo Tree\, under which the Buddha received enlightenment;\nJudaism’s tree of the knowledge of good and evil; Christianity’s cross\, or Christ’s tree; Islam’s\ntree of happiness and good fortune; as well as the tree of eternal life\, usually associated with\ncultures east of Iraq. \nAs Alice Walker writes in The Color Purple: “I suddenly knew that if I cut a tree\, MY arm\nwould bleed.” Scientists such as Carl Sagan claim that the oak and the human are molecularly\nthe same…. \nAnd finally\, from Emerson again: “If you agree with me\, I may yet be wrong. But if the\nElm tree says the same thing\, I know I am right.”

SUMMARY:Stations of the Cross Labyrinth Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Center for Spiritual Living for\nA Contemplative\, Self-Paced Experience\nReflecting on the Stations of the Cross Labyrinth Walk \nGood Friday\, April 18th 1:00 – 8:00PM\n4080 East Russell Road\nLas Vegas\, NV 89120 \nAt Center for Spiritual Living\, we consider Jesus of Nazareth to be the example of how to live in conscious union with the Divine\, whom he called Father. We consider Jesus to be not the exception but the Wayshower. His was a life well-worth following. So on this Good Friday\, we’ve created an opportunity for you to consciously walk the last days of this amazing being. \nOn Friday\, April 18th from 1:00 – 8:00 pm we are opening our doors and making our Vision Labyrinth available for you to symbolically walk the path often referred to as the Stations of the Cross. This is designed to be completed as a self-paced contemplative experience. It usually takes 30-45 minutes to complete this contemplative walk. \nThrough the lens of metaphysical and mystical wisdom\, we’ll walk the path of Jesus’s last days — not in suffering\, but in transcendence\, compassion\, and with divine surrender. \nEach station becomes a mirror—reflecting our own inner journey of release\, rebirth\, and resurrection. This is designed to be a time for personal reflection\, compassionate healing\, and spiritual awakening. \nSo\, we invite you to come walk with us. Walk in truth\, in spirit\, and in love as we walk the Stations of the Cross.

SUMMARY:Embodied Practices
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Be Fully Alive!\nYou’ve probably heard about mindfulness\, but maybe not bodyfulness. Understanding how we connect to our bodies through embodied practices will be a 6-week exploration at the Interfaith Center for Spiritual Living. We will be using Hillary L. McBride’s book\, Practices for Embodied Living\, to explore embodiment. It is an invitation to: Be Here Now. \nJoin Rev. Sharlyn Menard for weekly practices from McBride’s book that help us understand our bodies and how we relate to them. There is no need to purchase the book unless you would like to\, as Sharlyn has developed materials based on the book for our use in each session. The sessions are on Tuesdays from 1:30 – 3 PM\, starting March 18 thru April 22nd . Text Julia at 206-683-2786 with RSVP or questions. \nWeek 1: Exploring Embodiment\nLife happens in and through our bodies. We will check in and get curious as we look at how our bodies\ntell the stories of what we have been through and who we come from. We will do some simple exercises\nand do some journaling. \nWeek 2: How We Become Disembodied\nThere are many stories in western culture that make it difficult to be in our bodies. Using the three\npathways\, mental\, social and physical\, we will discover how they have shaped our experiences. More\nexercises to build our bodily resources to get unstuck. \nWeek 3: The Body Overwhelmed\nThis week we will look at how we can heal the body from stress and overwhelm. Exercises on boundary\nskills\, comfort and care\, breathing\, play and expression\, nurturance\, and release and grounding give us\nthe tools to learn to be safe with ourselves. \nWeek 4: Feeling Feelings\nThis week’s focus is on getting to know the emotional body. Using seven basic emotions of anger\,\ndisgust\, sadness\, fear\, desire\, joy\, and excitement we explore the emotional body through discussion and\nexercises. \nWeek 5: You Are Not Broken\nThis week we will examine how we might relate differently to pain\, illness\, and injury. By looking at our\nbeliefs about pain or discomfort we explore being present to pain or changing the cycle. Lots of\ninteresting depth and compassion to dig into with this exploration! \nWeek 6: Holy Flesh\nThis final week we look at reconciling the spirit and body divide. The cultural landscape is permeated by\ninherited theological paradigms urging us to control and disavow our bodies to get closer to the sacred.\nBy exploring this with exercises and some embodied prayer time we can hopefully say\, “My body is a\nlandscape of interconnection.” \nRev. Sharlyn Menard is a retired person on a journey to make her life and those who travel\nalongside her more joyful and embodied.
